Biography

Drew Cumpson - Owner/Consultant

Born and brought up in Kingston Ontario, my brother and I were raised under the guidance of the most wonderful parents. They inculcated the concept of strong work ethics and high morals that worked as the foundational stone for my success. This helped me in planning my life at a very young age and I figured out what I needed to do for sustaining life. Being a philanthropist at heart, I started my life as a lifeguard during my teenage years and later took several other volunteer positions for supporting the human community.

After starting university, I couldn’t resist my plans of higher aspirations. I decided to go to Peru on a humanitarian trip, believing it was the best way to shape the rest of my life. Being hit by the “travel bug”, I created my wish list of visiting the New7Wonders of the World. After returning from this trip, I wished to join one of the most prestigious restaurants in Toronto. Everything was going as per the plan, until I went prey to a high-rise wave that crashed me to the ocean floor, breaking my neck and transformed me into a ventilator-dependent C4 quadriplegic with no movement below my shoulders. This was the hardest road to recovery but, as soon as I stabilized, I started figuring out a more meaningful way to succeed in life. It took me 51 months to regain some normalcy but, with the support of my family, friends and of course my dog Sawyer, I emerged to be what I am today.

Inaccessibility was the deadliest concern I had thus, I decided to take a step ahead for solving the mobility issue by starting H&D Consulting. Being a travel lover, I still had the 6 more wonders to see but, I started to succeed to reach them with a little planning and scheduling. I started with Chichen Itza in Mexico in 2016 and will be visiting the Coliseum in Rome in November 2018. I also decided to become a peer support for other individuals, who have suffered spinal cord injuries.

I was unaware of the issues people face while living with a disability especially when it comes to mobility issues and accessibility. It is not until you are faced with a mobility issue that you realize how inaccessible the world is. All it takes is one step to make a business a nightmare for people with disabilities. This is where H&D Consulting comes into play, helping businesses become accessible and compliant with AODA standards by 2025.

I finished my degree in 2016 and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management. Scrolling through the job boards and websites, I landed at the perfect job in my field. I am greatly obliged to the company that hired me and made my work environment as accessible as needed by me. This is when I realized that this world is in real need for the services and I introduced the concept of H&D Consulting.
